Artist Process Thoughts

A real book about a real artwork. 

One of the first thoughts I had when I began thinking about my Artist Residency at Shop Gal was "How will I physically document this process?". Having a real, tangible expression of my creative process felt really important to me. It's something I learnt in high school art, and is something I've been doing in my personal life. Documenting year after year in scrapbooks, junk journals and diaries. 

This body of work has centered around hand painted illustrations and textile techniques on thrifted linens. Each piece has so much texture, character and flaws. Those features have felt really important for me to embrace with the rise of generative AI "art" this year. This was also a driving reason why I wanted a place to express the actual journey of art making in a process book. Documenting what I tried and what didn't work. Expressing how I feel about the journey of my first residency. Showing the knowledge I have gained by spending time learning how to use and problem solve with a very old (temperamental) sewing machine. 

I have made this body of work with my hands, and I have made this book with my hands. It's not perfect, because it's human made. I feel that seeing how an artwork came to be is becoming increasingly important. I'm looking forward to showing to process of creating this body of work alongside the finished pieces at the opening exhibition. (Details below)
